I tell you a secret: I was born and lived about 60 km from Slovenia and I didn't visit it until a few years ago. I know, I know, I have no excuses. Since I was a little girl I already listened to radio stations in a strange language and I grew up with the idea that, if you smoke or consume a lot of gasoline, it is convenient for you to cross the border every few times. But it wasn't until this trip that I discovered that while my Friuli Venezia Giulia is of course more handsome, hehe, Slovenia is a super complete destination! In this post we tell you the 20 best things to see and do in Slovenia, so put on the most comfortable footwear and get ready to fall in love with one of the greenest and most amazing countries in Europe.

1. Visit the Bled Lake, our favorite site in Slovenia (and many others). It is a place so charming that it will bewitch you from the first moment, as it happened to us. We recommend you to enjoy it calmly, and if you can stay in the surroundings for a few days much better. Arriving from Ljubljana is simple, you can do it by bus, car or even on a tour like this.

2. A short distance from Bled is the throat ofVintgar Gorge, where there is a 1.6 km walk that crosses rock walls, crystal clear water pools and fairytale landscapes. This was our visit to Vintgar Gorge.

3. If you are one of those who enjoy the mountain like a gnome, write this name: Triglav. It is nothing more and nothing less than the highest mountain in Slovenia (2,864m). They say that all Slovenes scale it at least once in a lifetime.

4. If, on the other hand, just thinking about climbing a mountain causes you arrhythmias and chronic cuddling, do not worry, there are quieter plans. How to make a route through some of the medieval villages more flirtatious in the country, like Škofja Loka, Ptuj or Kranj. For this you should rent a car and prepare a free excursions.

5. Ljubljana Not only is it the capital of the country, but it is its most exciting city, full of beautiful corners, where you can walk and fall in love little by little with this unknown country. If you have a few days trip to Slovenia, this will be the perfect base to stay. In this post we tell you 20 things to see and do in Ljubljana, (coming soon), although we already anticipate that our favorites are to cross the Dragon Bridge and watch the sunset from the castle hill.

6. The Predjama Castle It is a place that does not leave you indifferent, surrounded by stories and legends ... Here we tell you more about this treasure of Slovenia. Best of all, it is usually included in day trips from Ljubljana.

7. Did you know that in Slovenia some of the largest caves in Europe are located? The Postonja Caves, without a doubt, they are worth a visit (yes, they are veneers: the simple entrance costs € 25 in low season and € 27 in high season). They are close to Predjama Castle, so a good idea is to combine both visits.

8. On our trip we enjoy like two gorrinos from the Slovenia gastronomy, like that of the rest of the Balkans. Here the great jewel is the famous cevapi (or ćevapčići), a plate of spicy minced meat sausages, served with bread, onion and kajmak, a cream cream similar to cream. It's delicious, so be sure to try it.

9. Being Slovenia a perfect destination to disconnect and reconcile with nature, a good and original option to stay is the glamping. It is a much more chic camping concept of the typical tent, look for example this one. We tried it in India and it freaked us out!

10. We were told wonders of Soca Valley, although we were pending. In this area you can take bike rides or even venture with rafting! It is best to explore it based on Bovec. Curiosity: the same river passes through my Italian region (Friuli Venezia Giulia) and there we call it Isonzo (and yes, it is very cool!).

11. If Lake Bled is the main protagonist of Slovenia, the Bohinj Lake It is his big secret. It is just 30 km from Bled, however it is not a place too frequented by tourists, which still makes it more interesting.

12. Another alpine lake, quiet and very handsome, is the Jasna Lake. Actually these are two artificial lakes that are very close to Kranjska Gora. It is the perfect place to stop along the way, fill the lungs with fresh air and beauty eyes.

13. To discover the most alternative neighborhood in Slovenia, go to Metelkova Mesto, in Ljubljana. What was once an area of military and government buildings, today is a crazy color, street art and hipster places. So much!

14. Slovenia does not have too many km of coastline, but the few that it has are very well used. If you only had to go to one place, this would be Piran, probably the most beautiful coastal town in the country. Here you have to do at least 3 things: climb the bell tower to enjoy the views, get lost in the narrow streets of the center and stuff yourself with seafood and fish.

15. What you have to give and take are mountains and rivers, and that only means one thing: waterfalls! There are a few that are worth it, but we especially recommend Boka waterfalls (Slap Boka), the Virje waterfalls (Slap Virje) and the Kozjak waterfalls (Slap Kozjak).

16. We already told you that gastronomy is a point in favor, but Slovenia also produces a lot and very good wine. If you like to taste the typical wines of each country you visit, here you will have to order a glass ofRenski Rizling and oftraminec. There are several wine tastings in Ljubljana, and you can even consider doing some roadtrips through the wine regions of the country, such as Vipava Valley, Goriška Brda or Maribor.

17. You may not know it, but Slovenia is a perfect destination for both hyper tourists and relaxed travelers. And what better than to spend a day at a spa to recharge batteries before continuing with this trip? For this we advise youhot springs of Dobrna, Rogaška Slatina or Pomurje.

18. Do you travel to Slovenia in winter? Take the opportunity to ski! Karnjska Gora It is the perfect gateway to the Julian Alps.

20. OR go to Croatia! It is one of our favorite European countries and, considering that you are very close, a visit is not crazy. If you don't know where to start, go directly to Istria.

Here we tell you 20, but they could be many more. Because, as you can see, Slovenia is a country with a lot of things to see and do almost infinite We encourage you to discover it for yourself, and on the way back tell us your favorites!
