Day 3: BERLIN

Saturday, January 7, 2012

The alarm clock rang at 8 in the morning and the truth is that it has cost us to get going and that today is the day we will have the opportunity to meet the famous Brandenburg Gate.
But before leaving Park Plaza Wallstreet Berlin Mitte and to be people, we have gone to breakfast at a bar near the Berlin hotel, where we have ordered a couple of chocolate croisants, a coffee and a coffee with milk, for 5 euros.
With the most toned stomach, we have gone straight to take the subway to take us directly to the area of the Holocaust Monument>, which is the first thing we want to visit today.
If it is your first visit to the city, a good option is to book a guided tour in Spanish to learn more about the history of each place of interest.

We had a small problem with the subway: we have cut the 2 stops we have next to the hotel for construction! So we had to take a bus to connect the lines.
This morning we have already left the hotel with quite gray weather and sparkling. It has not given us a truce and when we have reached the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin we have had to open the umbrellas. It is seen that today the rain will accompany us for a good while.
We have traveled the 2711 blocks that make up the Holocaust monument (well ... not everyone!) And although we had read in several places that there were many people who were indifferent to the monument to us this has not happened to us. While we were going through something in us, he reminded us of what it meant.

Holocaust Monument

Yes, it is true that it has not happened to us like in other similar places, that our skin has bristled, but it is inevitable to shudder if you think about the history it has.

From here we have gone to the Brandenburg Gate to take some photos of the day, although the day does not accompany too much!

Posing at the Brandenburg Gate

We cannot avoid taking the picture at the Adlon Hotel, next to the Brandenburg Gate, where the "famous" episode of Michael Jackson taught the baby out the window.

Tourism starts to appear the streets of Berlin Although the rain does not stop.

Today we have a reservation to visit the dome of the Reichstag at 12.15 (we booked online about 2 months ago), so first we stopped for coffee at a Dunkin Donuts near the Brandenburg Gate. The only place where we found empty chairs to sit on.
It is clear that with rain and cold, we are all looking for shelter somewhere hot,
And here we get the surprise of the day ... they make us pay 50 cents to enter the bathroom ... despite having consumed 2 coffees with milk and another alone (?)
Now it turns out that what happened yesterday in the Berlin Cathedral was a simple anecdote.
After "dropping the pasta" we go straight to the Reichstag which is less than 5 minutes walk and we follow a small queue, we show the passports, we go through a couple of security arches and some more things, before getting our audio guide in Spanish to visit the dome of the Reichstag and inside we go !!

Inside the dome of the Reichstag

We are in the dome for more than 1 hour, listening to the audio guide and trying to discover what buildings we see through it.

When we leave it is after 1.30 pm and we decide to take the subway to go to Mehringdamm from the Brandenburg Gate .
There is the famous local Currywurst Curry 36.
It is highly recommended in the forums and in the guides, so we do not doubt it even a minute before we set off.
When we arrived we found a good tail that we stoically endured by the desire we have to try this delicacy that we have been advised so much.
We leverage on one of the standing tables and savor a couple of currywurst each, with chips and two colas for 13 euros !!
To honor the truth, it must be said that it does not kill, but that it is a dish that must be tested at least once and where better than in a place with these opinions.
Now the time has come to go to him, but before we stop to drink coffee in a bar that we find along the way and thus replenish the forces a bit.
Once in the museum they accept the UOC card again and we pay 10 euros both for the tickets.
We are in the museum almost 3 hours. The idea was to be a little less, but in the face of so many wonders we cannot resist.
We have chosen to make a quick visit since the idea is to go before it gets too dark in the KadeWe area.
The museum seems like a real past. We enjoy at the Ishtar Gate of the Pergamon Museum as children ...
If you do not want to waste time in the queue, quite long especially in high season and holidays, you can book this quick ticket or this day pass that will give you access to all the museums on the island.
Another option is to buy the Berlin WelcomeCard, a card that includes unlimited public transport, discounts of up to 50% in more attractions and the option to include the entrance to two museums on Museum Island.

We can't let the Pergamon Altar gape at you.

And what about the Gate of Miletus? A real wonder!

Before leaving, we go to the area of the Mushatta Facade and remember sitting in front of our trip to Jordan a couple of years ago.

And since we don't want to leave without seeing one of the wonders of this museum again, we return to the Ishtar Gate, to sit for a while and contemplate it with more tranquility.

At the exit we take the subway again and we arrive at KadeWe, where we miss a good time for the 7 floors it has.
The one that catches our attention is the sixth floor, which is where they have all the food ...
Because it is still early, if not, we are not taken out of there even with hot water.
In the end we have to run almost because we are about to faint. We have already verified that in the premises they put the heating to butt, but here it is much stronger.
We are dressed in winter and as much as we take off our clothes, we can't stand the heat !!
We continue on the Kurfürstendamm street in Berlin which is a 3.5 kilometer street full of shops on both sides.
We are left with our mouths open, as so many times these days, because the stores are huge ... it seems that every time we move forward they are :))
After a good time just walking around (we have no idea about shopping), we decided it's time for dinner.
We are looking for an Italian restaurant that has been recommended to us, Ali Baba from Berlin, but after more than half an hour looking for him, we are unable to find him, so with the body about to leave us, we stop at a fast-food “restaurant” that we usually use when we are away from home, the ubiquitous McDonals! ! Before returning to take the subway that will take us to our deserved "rest" today ...
But before we stop to take the photos at night in Alexanderplatz ... we really want to!

Berlin Dom at dusk

Television tower

And suddenly before us appeared one of the best images we took of Berlin, a flock of birds on the Berliner Dom. This is almost over and tomorrow is our last day in Berlin. With these thoughts we return to the Park Plaza Wallstreet Berlin Mitte where we fall asleep in our bed, hoping to spend the last hours in the city tomorrow before returning home.
